Tutorial #5 - Watermarking photographs with Photoshop

How to add your siggy or watermark to your photograph.

This is the simplest way I know how to add your siggy or your watermark.
Open your photo of choice in photoshop. Then go to file up above and choose New...
It will bring up another window. Put the title as whatever you want. For this one I will name it Edmond4102008

Since I save my pics at the largest 10pxls I will choose the dimensions on the new file Height 5000 pixels and the Width 3500.

It is always better for the canvas to be too big rather than too small. It can always be cropped later if needed.

Resolution 300 pixels/inch I have color mode at RGB 8 bit Background Transparent

Hit ok

Click on your picture. Then go to the side menu and click on the marqui tool. It is probably the first tool that looks like connect the dots in a square.
Go to your picture and it will look like an x. Go to the corner of your picture and select the area that you want to trasfer. For me I wanted to select the whole picture so I stared at the top left corner and left clicked with my mouse.... holding it down while I dragged the marqui to the far bottom right corner. (When you let go it will have chosen where you let go... so don't let go until you know for sure that is the entire picture or the part of the picture you want to copy for the transfer.)

Go to the top and click on Edit, scroll to copy and click on it. Once you have done that you will want to click on the new file you created. Go back to edit after you clicked on the new file, you will see paste now. Click on Paste. It will paste the selected section of your picture in the new file. This is good because now you can form several layers. (You can close out of the original picture now.)

Go to your tools sidebar. You will see in the 3rd section down, a tool that looks like the letter T. Click on it. Click anywhere on the picture now. (It does not matter where you click because you can always move the typing after you have finished.) This is where you need to type your name or whatever you choose...

Once you have typed whatever - you can highlight it to change the color. At the top there will be a box with a color on it. Highlight your typing first, then click on the box up top. It will bring up the color chart. Once you are satisfied with a color, you can highlight the wording again and choose the font and the size that suits you best.

There is a T with an arrow on the left and bottom of it. That will switch your lettering horizontally or vertically. There is also a T with a bended double sided arrow next to the color choice. That will give you option to arch or do other fun things to your words.

In another bar side you should have a list of the actions you have taken - different layers. There is one option that says opacity 100%. This is where you change your lettering so that you can see through it or not. In the pic below I have the opacity for the lettering set at 54%. The opacity is what makes it look like a water mark.

You can move the lettering by going to the tools sidebar and clicking on the t shaped arrows with the arrow pointing to the far left upper corner. Next to the marqui box. Then click on your word and move it to where you want.

When you are satisfied with what you created click on file then save as. Save it in the psd. format. This allows you to change it later if you like. You can then go back in and save as again but in jpeg. format.

Your instructions are so easy to follow. Thanks for all of the help and ideas that you are giving. I may be able to use my camera yet:)

I use Photoshop CS. Yes, they have a free download - but I think it is the book or coarse... not the program (but I may be wrong.) It is a hefty download!!!
